Gavião, Portalegre, Alentejo
Ten shelters built from local cork oak, beside the river beach at Alamal on the Tejo.
Portugal produces half the world's cork, and almost nobody builds with it. Gavião does: ten shelters clad and lined in cork from the surrounding montado, alongside thirteen glamping tents fitted out as properly as hotel rooms.
It sits near the Alamal praia fluvial — a river beach on the Tejo, which is how the interior of Portugal swims in August when the coast is four hours away.
Best for: seeing what cork can do, and a river to jump into
The Beira Baixa railway line stops at Belver, which the village puts three kilometres away, and carries on down the Tagus to Lisbon. Gavião town centre is also three kilometres off, and is connected by bus to several Portuguese cities.
