Why we love it
Asturias is the wet, green, Atlantic Spain that most visitors never see, and El Toral is a working ecofarm in the middle of it: solar for the electricity, a natural spring for the water, and a wood-fired stove and boiler doing the cooking and the heating.
Off-grid here means literally rather than aspirationally. The trade-off is obvious and, for the right guest, the entire attraction.
Best for: anyone who wants to see how a self-sufficient place actually runs
Worth knowing
- La Casita Redonda runs on a composting toilet and a solar-heated shower. The operator calls it, and the cabaña, totally off-grid.
- There are no rates anywhere on the operator's own site. The Cosy Coco Cabaña is listed and booked through Airbnb because, the owners say, prices and availability are always changing.
- You are not booking accommodation so much as a residential educational course. The owners say Asturias's campsite rules made an eco-campsite unworkable, so stays are sold under that heading instead.

Who runs it
Liz and Steve
They arrived in Asturias on 2 March 2011 looking for a place to live simply, found El Toral and have been building a smallholding from scratch since. Liz's plan was to acquire land, live on it, grow food and pay as few bills as possible; Steve took voluntary redundancy from local-government town and country planning after seven years advising on sustainable development, to, in his words, finally walk the walk.
