May to June and September. Midges peak from late June through August, and most Scottish sites are at their emptiest either side of that window.
Can you wild camp in Scotland?
Largely yes. The Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 permits responsible wild camping on most unenclosed land, with byelaw restrictions in parts of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs. Everything on this list is a formal site rather than wild camping.
Are Scottish cabins open in winter?
Several are. Eagle Brae runs year-round and is arguably better under snow; the campsites are more seasonal, so check the individual listing.
