Bird's-nest cabins built from reclaimed timber high in the pines above the Ume river.

Why we love it

The Bird's Nests are treetop cabins built from recycled materials and fitted to hotel standard, set among pines above the Ume river in southern Lapland. A twelve-room eco-hotel was added in 2014 for anyone who would rather not climb.

Granö is a village on the river rather than a resort, and the operation is run with the surrounding valley in mind — beaver safaris, fishing, and the aurora from autumn onwards.

Best for: northern Sweden with a river underneath you

Worth knowing

  • A new 1,100 m² restaurant and conference building is going up on the riverbank. Construction started before Christmas 2025 and the opening is planned for summer 2027.
  • Pets are not allowed in the eco hotel at all, and cost SEK 500 in the cottages and the Bird's Nests that do take them.
  • The campsite by the river is open from May to September only.

The SJ night train from Stockholm reaches Vindeln at about 08:00 and the lodge will book the taxi transfer, roughly 20 minutes. Länstrafiken bus 31 from Umeå or Lycksele takes about an hour to the Granö C E12 stop, then about ten minutes on foot. By car it is the E12: about an hour from Umeå, about 45 minutes from Lycksele. Taxi transfers from Umeå or Lycksele airports take about an hour and are booked through the lodge. There are AC and CCS chargers on site, paid through the Monta app.

  • Granö — The village the lodge belongs to and is the largest employer in; the Granö C E12 bus stop is about ten minutes' walk away.
  • Umeå — About an hour away on the E12.
  • Lycksele — About 45 minutes away on the E12.

  • Vindeln station — The Stockholm night train arrives around 08:00; the taxi transfer to the lodge is about 20 minutes.

Who runs it

Granö Beckasin was started in 2007 by villagers and local entrepreneurs who decided Granö would not fade away when the forestry jobs went. It is still owned by a group of friends from the village, led by chairman Jan Wejdmark, and is now the village's largest employer.
