Agriturismo Querceto di Castellina

Castellina in Chianti, Siena, Tuscany

Fifteenth-century stone cottages on a family wine and olive estate in Chianti, between Siena and Florence.

Why we love it

A working organic estate rather than a hotel with vines attached — the family make wine, grappa and olive oil, and the cottages are the fifteenth-century farm buildings that came with the land. Self-catering, with kitchens, which is the right arrangement in a part of Italy where the shopping is half the holiday.

Castellina in Chianti sits on the ridge road between Siena and Florence, so both are a short drive and neither is where you will want to spend the afternoon.

Best for: a week of doing very little among vines you can walk into

Worth knowing

  • This is an agriturismo with self-catering apartments rather than a hotel, and the operator says so plainly: daily cleaning and a change of linen come only with the Livia suite.

Who runs it

The Di Battista family

Guido Masini bought the estate in 1945. His daughter Laura took back the management in 1989 and, with her husband Giorgio, an architect, restored the fifteenth-century buildings into an agriturismo and started a Tuscan cooking school. Her eldest son Jacopo founded the winery and bottled the first vintage in 1998; her youngest, Filippo, directs the agriturismo, and Jacopo's wife Mary runs marketing and hospitality.
