The original Norwegian landscape hotel: glass-walled rooms scattered through a river gorge, each angled so you cannot see another.

Why we love it

Juvet more or less invented the category everything else on this page belongs to. The rooms are separate structures set on stilts through a birch gorge above the Valldøla river, each with one wall of glass and each rotated so that no room can see into another. Nothing outside is landscaped. That is the idea.

Film crews found it — it stood in for a tech billionaire's retreat in Ex Machina, and later for the Roys in Succession — but it remains a small, family-run operation on a working farm rather than the resort those associations suggest.

Best for: anyone who cares about buildings as much as about the view out of them

Worth knowing

  • Open only from the start of March to the start of November.
  • A weekend stay has to be booked for the whole weekend, Friday to Sunday.
  • The landscape rooms have one or two walls of plain glass and no curtains — the hotel's own position is that curtains do not belong here.

Åndalsnes — 24.9 miles, about 45 minutes from the door

The 40 km drive from Åndalsnes goes over Trollstigen, open from the end of May to the end of October; when Trollstigen is shut for the winter the route is via Sjøholt, 125 km and an hour and three quarters. Ålesund Airport Vigra is 100 km, about ninety minutes, and the hotel can arrange transport from 3,300 NOK each way. Two buses a day run from Åndalsnes towards Geiranger from mid-June to mid-August and pass right by the hotel — get off at Gudbrandsjuvet.
