Quinta Rural

Northern Portugal

A small family-run nature campsite in the Serra da Cabreira mountains of northern Portugal.

Why we love it

The Serra da Cabreira is inland northern Portugal — granite, terraces, and villages emptying out — and it gets a fraction of the visitors that the Gerês park to the north does. Quinta Rural is small, family-run, and combines camping with a handful of glamping units and a working smallholding.

The north is green, wet and cool by Portuguese standards, which makes it the sensible half of the country in July.

Best for: mountains rather than coast, and a site you can walk across in a minute

Worth knowing

  • Caravans and medium or large motorhomes cannot get on to the terrain at all.
  • Nobody is on a desk: unannounced arrivals are not accepted, the pitches can only be booked by email, and the bar runs on an honesty list.

The practicalities

Included
  • Warm showers, with no coins
  • Spring water from the farm's own mountain source
  • Free parking at the front of the farm
  • Pitch, people and a side area for gear in the camping rate
  • Some electricity points for light use — chargers, lamps, cool boxes

Getting there

Nearest station
Guimarães — 32.1 miles
Without a car
Difficult, but possible

The farm sits at 865 metres on the edge of the Serra da Cabreira, just outside a near-abandoned medieval village. The owners point drivers at the route from exit 12, Arco de Baulhe / Cabeceiras de Basto.

Who runs it

Natascha and Tiago

A family-run nature retreat: in the owners' own words, "you'll be welcomed by the two of us, Natascha, my 2015 son Tiago (and some horses, dogs, cats & whatever the cat dragged in)". Every guest accommodation on the estate was conceived, built or renovated by them.
