Odda, Vestland, Fjord Norway
Four treehouses anchored to living pines six metres above Odda, looking down the Sørfjorden.
Fifteen square metres each, wrapped around the trunk of a living pine and held six metres off the ground — the whole load carried by the tree itself. Helen & Hard, one of Norway's better-known practices, designed them, and the restraint is the achievement: underfloor heating, a kitchenette, a bathroom, a bed, and a window filled entirely with the Sørfjorden.
Odda sits at the head of the fjord, which makes this a sensible base for Trolltunga if you are that way inclined, and a very good place to not climb anything if you are not.
Best for: two people and a fjord, with the trees doing the structural work
