Why we love it

Potes is the market town in the Liébana valley on the Cantabrian side of the Picos, and it is the sensible base for the eastern massif — the Fuente Dé cable car is up the valley, hauling you eight hundred metres in four minutes.

La Viorna is a short way out of town with the mountains filling the view. Quieter than staying in Potes itself, and close enough to walk in for dinner.

Best for: the Cantabrian side, and the Fuente Dé cable car

Worth knowing

  • No vehicle may move on the site between midnight and 8am. Arrive after that and you park outside and walk in.
  • The site opens on 1 April and closes on 15 October — there is no winter season here.
  • People who are not staying are not let in; the site does not run a visitor service.

A kilometre out of Potes on the road up to the Monasterio de Santo Toribio. Cross Potes towards Fuente Dé, turn left at the edge of town onto the CA-885 for the monastery, and the campsite is 800 metres from that junction.
