Log House Holidays

Cotswold Water Park, Gloucestershire, England

Family-run for over 40 years: eight Finnish log cabins around a private 130-acre lake on a personal nature reserve.

Why we love it

Family-run for over 40 years: eight Finnish log cabins around a private 130-acre lake on a personal nature reserve. Lakeside wood-fired hot tubs, saunas, private jetties, paddleboards, kingfishers and otters. Repeatedly featured in The Times as the benchmark for British lakeside cabin holidays. Dog-friendly cabins available. Book direct.

Best for: lake-life luxury, families and dogs

Worth knowing

  • You cannot book a single night — the shortest stays are Monday to Friday or Friday to Monday — and you have to be out by 9am on departure day, 10am at Mayo Landing.
  • The Finnish hot tub is a paid extra, from £100 a stay, and so are extra logs, kayaks, paddleboards, fishing and dogs.
  • It is a private nature reserve around open water: they advise young children be under constant supervision, and no outdoor music is allowed at all.

Who runs it

Anthony Edmondson

The reserve is, in their words, still looked after by the man who started it all, along with the support of his family. Anthony Edmondson spent six years underground in a Yukon silver mine, then bought an ex-gravel pit in 1980; more than 50,000 trees have gone in since, along with marginal plants, reed beds and wildflowers, and the site was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1993.
