Why we love it
Espen Surnevik's cabins stand on slender legs among the pines above Gjessåsjøen, clad in dark steel and shaped like something that wandered out of a Tove Jansson illustration. In 2019 they took the main prize at the European Steel Design Awards, beating Adidas's headquarters and the new court at Roland-Garros — an unusually literal case of a small building outperforming large ones.
Finnskogen is the forest belt along the Swedish border, settled by Finns in the seventeenth century. It is quiet in a way that surprises people.
Best for: architecture pilgrims, and anyone who wants trees in every direction

Getting there

Two hours' drive from Oslo, and you can drive all the way — there is parking right by the cabins. By train it is Oslo to Hamar or Kongsvinger and a bus on to Flisa, about three hours; by bus, Oslo Bus Terminal via Elverum to Flisa, three hours. PAN will collect guests from Flisa if it is arranged at least two weeks ahead, and from Oslo Airport Gardermoen at least a week ahead.

Who runs it
Kristian Rostad and Christine Mowinckel
PAN opened in 2018, founded by the couple Kristian Rostad and Christine Mowinckel on their forest estate by the Gjessåsjøen. It is connected to the farm where they live, and they say they wanted to create a retreat where one can find peace and harmony in the nature of Finnskogen.
