Masseria Aprile

Locorotondo, Bari, Puglia

Trulli and a working masseria in the Valle d'Itria, in the same family since about 1700.

Why we love it

Trulli are the conical drystone huts of the Valle d'Itria, built without mortar so they could be pulled down quickly when the tax inspector came. Most of the ones tourists sleep in have been restored to within an inch of their lives; these belong to a masseria that has been in the Aprile family for twelve generations, a kilometre outside Locorotondo.

Locorotondo itself is the white circular town on the hill, and Alberobello — the one on all the postcards — is close enough to visit early and leave before the coaches.

Best for: Puglia's stone architecture, from inside it

Who runs it

The farm has belonged to the same family since 1700, the year it was built, and is part of a 25-hectare estate. In 1992 the owner, with her husband Antonio and her children Valerio and Stefania, renovated the buildings and opened the agriturismo. The family lives in the ancient stone manor house on the estate, and presses its own extra virgin olive oil from Nociara, Leccina, Ogliarola and the local Nozzarola.
