Alpine apartments on a working farm above Vipiteno, in the German-speaking end of Italy.
Why we love it
South Tyrol is Italy in law and Austria in almost everything else — the farms are Höfe, the food is dumplings, and the Roter Hahn scheme that certifies working farms for guests is one of the better-run rural tourism systems in Europe.
Maurerhof is one of those farms: apartments with their own kitchens and bathrooms, cattle outside, and the Stubai and Zillertal ridges on the skyline. Vipiteno's arcaded main street is a few minutes down the hill.
Best for: mountain walking with a farm breakfast, at Austrian standards and Italian prices

Ten minutes from the Brenner A22 motorway exit at Vipiteno, then signs to Racines Giovo. The nearest railway stations are Vipiteno and Brenner and the farm will collect guests from either, and from the long-distance coach at Vipiteno; there is also a frequent regular bus between Val Giovo and Vipiteno.

Who runs it
The family bought the Maurerhof — first documented in 1288, at 1,300 m in Val Giovo — in 1988 and rebuilt it with timber from the surrounding forests and silver quartzite from Val di Vizze, adding the Bergalm alpine pasture in 1990. They farm it and let five apartments; Peter keeps a cellar bar where guests are offered a Marende snack and a glass of wine.
