Harads, Lapland
Seven architect-designed rooms in the pines fifty kilometres south of the Arctic Circle, including one clad entirely in mirrors.
Why we love it
Kent and Britta Lindvall put the first treeroom up outside Harads in 2010 and commissioned a different Scandinavian architecture practice for each one that followed. The Mirrorcube is wrapped in reflective glass so it disappears into the forest; the Bird's Nest looks like a heap of sticks from outside and is a clean white room within; the 7th Room is a black net slung between two trunks ten metres up.
Hydroelectric power and combustion toilets. Fifty kilometres south of the Arctic Circle, so the northern lights are in season for a good part of the year.
Best for: the one place on this list you would visit for the architecture alone
Worth knowing
- The UFO and the Bird's Nest are entered by climbing a ladder. Large luggage is left in a store room at check-in and you go up with a borrowed backpack.
- The Mirrorcube, the Cabin, the Bird's Nest and the UFO have no shower of their own — you use the showers and saunas in an adjacent building.
- It is a 500-metre walk through the forest from the check-in desk and restaurant to the tree rooms. Staff will drive you and your bags if you would rather not.

Boden C is the closest railway station, about 35 minutes away, and the transfer from it is 1,700 SEK for one to three people. A helicopter from Luleå takes 25 minutes, price on request, with a 20 kg soft-bag luggage limit.
