Why we love it
Trollstigen is eleven hairpin bends climbing a wall of rock, and it is one of the National Tourist Routes — the set of roads Norway has deliberately treated as architecture. Staying at the bottom means driving it early, before the coaches start, which is the difference between a road and a car park.
Cabins sleeping one to five, plus tent and caravan pitches with hook-ups. Straightforward, and in the right place.
Best for: driving Trollstigen at seven in the morning
Worth knowing
- A short season: the campsite's own opening-hours page gives 16 April to 28 September, and the guesthouse with the hot food does not open until 8 May.
- Showers are paid for by token, 20 NOK each.
- The cheapest cabins have four beds and a small kitchen but no water at all — no shower and no WC.

- Åndalsnes — 6.2 miles
From Åndalsnes take the E-136 for 4 km towards Dombås, look for the signs for RV 63, then drive 6 km towards Trollstigen and follow the sign 'Trollstigen Gjestegård' until the site appears on the right. Coming the other way it is the first campsite after Trollstigen on RV 63. From Dombås it is 100 km on the E-136 towards Åndalsnes, then 6 km on RV 63.
