Extremadura
A mini campsite in the Sierra de Gata with very large pitches and almost nobody on them.
Why we love it
Extremadura is the least-visited region in mainland Spain, and the Sierra de Gata is one of its quietest corners — chestnut woods, slate villages, and a dialect of its own. El Merino is deliberately tiny, with pitches far larger than the Spanish average, glamping tents, and a pool.
For walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers, and largely empty in the weeks when the coast is not.
Best for: space, silence, and the cheapest good week in Spain
Worth knowing
- No fire or open flame of any kind is allowed on the pitches. Cooking is done on the site's own gas grills in the shared outdoor kitchen.
- Vehicles may not move inside the site between 10pm and 8am, and there is a car park at the entrance for arrivals.
- The season runs 17 April to 18 October and the site is shut outside it.

Take the exit directly off the EX-205 at km 45.5. Do not take the road through the village of Teso de Abajo even if your sat-nav tells you to. There is a car park at the entrance to leave the car or motorhome on arrival.

Who runs it
A small, rustic mini-campsite run by its Dutch owners, who say they take no group bookings and no seasonal pitches.
