Senja Camping

Silsand, Troms, Northern Norway

A family site of thirty years' standing on Senja, with nine cabins and its own ski slope.

Why we love it

Senja is Norway's second-largest island and gets a fraction of Lofoten's traffic despite arguably better mountains — the sharp granite fins along the outer coast are the reason photographers keep going back. This site has been running for over thirty years at Silsand on the eastern side, with nine cabins of various sizes and pitches for tents and vans.

Pitches close in mid-September. The cabins and the ski slope carry it through the winter, which is when the lights are out.

Best for: Senja without the Lofoten crowds

Worth knowing

  • Cabins D and E, the 12 m² pair, have no water and so no bath and no shower; those are in the service centres.
  • Showers cost NOK 10 for six minutes.
  • Dogs are not allowed inside the cabins.
