Silsand, Troms, Northern Norway
A family site of thirty years' standing on Senja, with nine cabins and its own ski slope.
Senja is Norway's second-largest island and gets a fraction of Lofoten's traffic despite arguably better mountains — the sharp granite fins along the outer coast are the reason photographers keep going back. This site has been running for over thirty years at Silsand on the eastern side, with nine cabins of various sizes and pitches for tents and vans.
Pitches close in mid-September. The cabins and the ski slope carry it through the winter, which is when the lights are out.
Best for: Senja without the Lofoten crowds
Torsmoveien 419, 9303 Silsand, 13 kilometres from Finnsnes, the closest community. Cross the Gisundbrua bridge, turn left, then left again at the crossroads in Islandsbotn and follow the road towards Vangsvik on the RV 860. From Gryllefjord and west Senja take the Rv 86 and turn off at Svanelvmoen, from where it is signed all the way.
