A small quiet site by the water at Morgedal, the village where modern skiing was invented.

Why we love it

Morgedal is where Sondre Norheim worked out how to fix a ski to a boot properly in the 1860s, and in doing so turned a means of transport into a sport. The Olympic flame has been lit here three times.

The campsite is small and unhurried, by the water in the valley bottom. Telemark in summer is a walking and paddling region that most foreign visitors drive straight through on the way to the fjords.

Best for: Telemark in summer, when nobody else is looking at it

Worth knowing

  • There is no reception. Check-in is self-service and you find your own pitch when you arrive.
  • No restaurant on site — the nearest food is a kilometre away, at Morgedal Spa & Resort or the museum café at the ski museum.
  • Tents go on the twenty pitches without electricity; the thirty-five powered pitches are for motorhomes and caravans.

Morgedalvegen 261, 3848 Morgedal. The campsite sits at the end of Morgedalstjønni, 1 km from the centre of Morgedal; leave the E134 at either the southern or the northern exit for Morgedal, about 1 km from the site.

  • Norsk Skieventyr — The Norwegian ski museum in Morgedal, the cradle of modern skiing; drop-in campers can also pay at its café.
  • Telemarkskanalen — Half an hour by car.
  • Vest-Telemark Museum, Eidsborg — Half an hour by car.
