Naturgredos

Extremadura

A sixteenth-century rural house below the Sierra de Gredos, and one of the province's first birdwatching centres.

Why we love it

The house dates from the sixteenth century and was restored in 1998; guests have been staying since 2003, which by the standards of Spanish rural tourism makes this an early adopter rather than a bandwagon. It was among the first birdwatching centres in the province, and the owners were doing ecotourism in Extremadura before the word was in common use.

Gredos has griffon vultures, black storks and Spanish imperial eagles. Bring binoculars or borrow theirs.

Best for: birds, and the people who can tell you what you are looking at

Worth knowing

  • The house is let whole and only whole, and the operator says access to the bedrooms is proportional to the size of the group — a party of four gets two of the four double rooms and three of the five bathrooms.
  • Cancel seven days out or less and nothing comes back. Between seven and fifteen days you get 40%, and between fifteen and thirty 60%.
  • It is a village house, not an isolated one. The operator calls it one of the most notable historical buildings in Cabezabellosa.
