Off-grid cabins in a west Waterford meadow under the Comeragh Mountains, with breakfast left at the door.
Why we love it
The owners describe the cabins as bedrooms in a meadow, which is about right — en-suite, comfortable, and otherwise stripped of anything that would distract from the fact that you are in a field under the Comeraghs. The Nire Valley is one of the quieter corners of Munster, a walking valley rather than a touring one.
A breakfast basket arrives in the morning. Dogs are welcome.
Best for: two nights of walking with a very short commute to bed
Worth knowing
- The last stretch of road is very narrow in parts, and the camp warns that its location is not on the maps of some sat navs.
- You walk from the car park to your cabin, which can be up to 200 metres away.
- The cabins are solar powered: phones, tablets and laptops charge, but hairdryers, straighteners, electric kettles and irons will not work.

Getting there
The R671 between Clonmel and Dungarvan. In Ballymacarbry turn onto the Nire Road, opposite the two pubs at the T-junction, then left over a small stone bridge about 120 m out of the village and follow the Knockalisheen Loop signs; the last kilometre and a half is very narrow in parts.

Who runs it
The owners came to the Nire Valley in 2012 after years of searching for a rural idyll, found no template for what they wanted and built the five cabins from scratch. They live on site and say it is their full-time job.
