Sardinia Camping Cala Gonone

Cala Gonone, Nuoro, Sardinia

Four hectares of pine shade two hundred metres from the sea at Cala Gonone, under the Gulf of Orosei cliffs.

Why we love it

Cala Gonone is the road-accessible way into the Gulf of Orosei, the stretch of limestone cliff hiding Cala Luna, Cala Mariolu and the rest of the beaches that Sardinia puts on its posters. Most of them can only be reached by boat, which leaves from the town.

The site is four hectares of well-shaded pine two hundred metres from the water — and shade, on that coast in August, is not a detail.

Best for: a boat out to a different cove every morning

Worth knowing

  • Minimum stays run long in summer: seven nights from 16 June to 16 September, and fourteen from 6 to 22 August.
  • The pool is open only from 1 June to 30 September, and its use is at the management's discretion.
  • Cala Fuili is the last cove on this coast you can reach by car — Cala Luna and the rest of the Gulf of Orosei beaches mean a boat.

Difficult, but possible

Leave the SS131 at km 69.300 for Lula/Dorgali onto the SS131 DCN, 20 km to Dorgali, then 10 km on the SS125. Coming from the north the operator says to ignore the satnav at Dorgali and follow the road signs through the Monte Tului tunnel. Olbia port and airport are 106 km away, Cagliari 220 km, Alghero 191 km. Supermarkets, bars, restaurants, the port and the bus stop are all a five-minute walk.
