Why we love it

The inventory is the appeal: hobbit huts dug into the ground, Nordic cabins, A-frames, a railway carriage, and a converted wheelhouse called the Boatel. It could easily have tipped into theme-park territory and mostly does not, because the site is small and owner-run and the shared parts — wood-fired hot tub, sauna, fire pits, communal kitchen — are where people actually end up.

Dogs are welcome in the A-frames. Castlebar is close, and Mayo's coast is an easy drive.

Best for: a group who cannot agree what they want to sleep in

Worth knowing

  • Quiet hours around the huts run from 10pm to 8am, and there is no smoking in the huts or communal buildings.
  • Dogs are welcome in the A-frame cabins only, and only small or medium ones.
