The Lemon Lodge

Aljezur, Algarve

An off-grid farmstead between the Monchique hills and the wild beaches of the Costa Vicentina.

Why we love it

This is the Algarve that the Algarve's reputation does not cover: the far west, above Aljezur, where the coast is a protected natural park, the beaches face the full Atlantic, and the development stops. The lodge is an off-grid smallholding between those beaches and the Monchique hills behind.

Founded by a group of friends rather than a company, and small enough that it shows.

Best for: surfing the Costa Vicentina and staying somewhere that has not been built for surfers

Worth knowing

  • The tap water is not drinkable — the drought has left the well short — so you bring your own.
  • First arrivals have to be in daylight. There is little phone signal, the roads in are dirt, and the lodge does not check anyone in after sunset.
  • There is no television and no air conditioning in any of the three units, and the salt-water plunge pool is currently out of order.

The practicalities

William and Michelle, Alex and Helena
